Ruth Carter started her career as a costume designer in theater and opera. She’s now bringing drama back to the stage for the characters in the movie Sparkle.
“It brought me back, in that it was fun to do stage performance costumes,” Carter tells ESSENCE.com. “It was fun to do costumes for a female singing group — all of the different transitions — from church girl walking on stage, to big star on and off the stage.”
From sequins to stitches, Carter takes us behind the seams of Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter’s fierce ’60s style in Sparkle, debuting this August 19.
