India Arie denied rumors of bleaching her skin on Friday.
The afro-centric singer was hit with criticism over her cover art for new single “Cocoa Butter,” which she shared on her Twitter page. The “Brown Skin” singer, known for being proud of her darker complexion, was called out for appearing much lighter on the cover.
Critics were especially confused by the cover photo since Arie had previously criticized the casting of light-skinned actress Zoe Saldana to play songstress Nina Simone in a biopic about the legendary singer’s life.
Arie headed back to Twitter to defuse the rumors saying, “1. I wouldn’t endanger my health that way, 2. I’m so in love with myself I have no DESIRE to BLEACH myself”…”3. The GLOW you see IS (magnificent) lighting…4. THE LIGHT you see, Well that’s all ME!!”
She ended the Twitter conversation saying, “And Yes! I love my #brownskin more than EVER!”
