“She was a genius. She was brilliant, but she paid a huge price,” says Nina Simone’s daughter Lisa Celeste Stroud of her mom in the stirring trailer for Netflix’s highly-anticipated documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone?
On top of interviews with family, friends and collaborators, director Liz Garbus found rare footage of Simone discussing her life and vision.”I think the only way to tell you who I am these days is to sing a song,” says Simone.
“I choose to reflect the times and the situations in which I find myself,” she adds. “How can you be an artist and not reflect the time?”
Stroud also reflects on a side of the legendary singer not often discussed. “My mother was one of the greatest entertainers of all time…when she was performing,” she says. “When the show ended she was alone, full of anger and rage.”
What Happened, Miss Simone? premieres June 26 on Netflix.
