It’s undeniable: From the top of our heads to the bottom of our feet, we as Black women are beautiful.
But what exactly does it mean to be Black? The multitalented and multicultural ESSENCE Fest performer Goapele doesn’t have a universal answer, but she does know what it means to her.
“We’re a lot more diverse than people know,” she said, adding that she has both South African and German-Jewish blood in her, plus she was raised in Oakland, Calif.
But Goapele feels that the Black experiences extends much deeper that just the physiological traits.
“[Being Black] means strength and beauty and being a target sometimes and having to hold it together,” she said. “It means having a lot of assumptions made about you. It means having swag. It means being a mother more than just my child. I could go on and on.”
