Curly girl beauty and co-star to the hit ABC show Black-ish, Yara Shahidi, has gorgeous hair. As more women embrace their own curls and coils they want to see more representation of their tresses in everything. That even goes for celebs and most certainly for millennial celebs! Yara took to the ‘Gram to share a gorgeous profile pic of herself and that massive mane of curls. Her only caption was, “* insert nonexistent curly hair emoji”.
While this can easily be over-looked over as you ogle over her beautiful hair, the desire to see one the biggest emotional connections through social media incorporate one’s hair texture does make sense. Most emoji’s have straight hair and that’s one of the reasons Dove came up with their Curly-Haired Emoji’s but they can only be used in messages and not a part of the numerous emoji’s that are on most apps like Instagram.
So, despite the fact that there aren’t any emoji’s for the curly girls, we can still appreciate Yara’s hair and her desire to see some emoji’s she connects to as a young black woman. It may seem like a little thing but beauty is subjective and we have to be aware of the images that are out here and what they are saying to our impressionable young black girls. We hear you Yara and we love your curls!
