Queen Latifah in an undisputed legend. In addition to being one of hip-hop’s pioneers, an Academy Award nominated actress, and our forever TV BFF, the Queen is also one of the beauty industry’s game changers.
While it’s easy for her beauty accolades to get buried on her very impressive resume, the Queen is here to gently remind us that she’s been advocating for diversity and inclusion for over ten years now.
She recently sat down with ESSENCE Now to talk about her role in the beauty world.
“I was able to create the Queen Collection with Covergirl, which was their entry into a line for women of color. I knew that we needed more tones than were offered. For me it’s what it should have always been, and creating this different identity for women,” she says
When asked what she thinks about the latest ladies to join the CoverGirl family, Issa Rae and Ayesha Curry Queen Latifah thinks it’s great! “I think that was great because I was opening the door of what a CoverGirl could and should look like.”
And her thoughts on the recent surge of brands rushing to be more inclusive. “The whole landscape has changed, and after the Queen Collection everybody, including CoverGirl expanded their lines for women of color. We were very successful! And people needed this,” she says.
