The oldest son of legend Tina Turner died in an apparent suicide Tuesday, officials confirmed.
According to Variety, Craig Raymond Turner was found dead in his California home from a gunshot wound. He was 59.
His mother has yet to comment on the news. She was spotted heading to fashion shows in Paris hours before his body was found.
Tina Turner had Craig when she was just 18-years-old. Known then as Anna Mae Bullock, she had her oldest child with Raymond Hill, a saxophonist from Ike Turner’s backing band. Their relationship soon fell apart, and she started dating Ike.
She later married Ike, who adopted Craig.
Turner said she endured 16 years of abuse at the hands of her ex-husband before finally breaking away from him in 1976 when she fled to a hotel in Dallas seeking help. According to the Guardian, Craig witnessed his parents’ violent relationship, which was chronicled in the 1993 movie What’s Love Got to Do with It.
“Ike’s children never reacted, but my oldest son, Craig, was a very emotional kid,” Turner told Oprah Winfrey in 2005. “He’d always look down in sadness. One day when Ike was fighting me, Craig knocked on the door and said, ‘Mother, are you all right?’”
In a chat with The Times earlier this year, the 78-year-old singer said she’s forgiven Ike Turner for abusing her during their marriage.
“As an old person, I have forgiven him, but it would not work with him,” she said. “He asked for one more tour with me, and I said, ‘No, absolutely not.’”
Craig grew up to become a real estate agent in the San Fernando Valley.
He is survived by his mother and half-brother Ronald.
