If you’ve scrolled through Instagram and have spotted women wearing t-shirts that say “Phenomenal Woman”, it’s all for a good cause.
Created by Meena Harris, the graphic t-shirts were created to spread the importance of women’s rights and civic action. The term “phenomenal woman” is derived from Maya Angelou‘s 1995 poem that described the grace of women, simply by existing.
Funds raised from the sale of the shirts go toward Emerge America, EMILY’s List, Essie Justice Group, Girls Who Code, NARAL, Planned Parenthood, and The United State of Women. As noted on their website, their effort has seen huge success in just three months, during which time they’ve sold 10,000 t-shirts.
On Monday, July 31, the shirts got even more visibility from famous faces supporting Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, which acknowledges the injustice of Black women being paid less than their counterparts. A plethora of stars have sported the shirt including Viola Davis, Gabourey Sidibe, Eve, Mya, Aja King, Serena Williams and dozens of other brand ambassadors.
