The violent right-wing rally in Charlottesville earlier this month that left one woman dead and several others injured was originally organized in support of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Ever since, people across the country have responded by removing other Confederate statues and symbols from public spaces.
Some have taken offense to this trend โ most notably President Donald Trump, who tweeted that it was โsad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments.โ
On Mondayโs edition of Fox & Friends, the presidentโs former campaign spokeswoman Katrina Pierson went even further, saying that the history of slavery and the Confederacy was โgood history.โ
Pierson was having a debate with Johns Hopkins professor Wendy Osefo about whether it was right for Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi to call for the removal of all Confederate monuments from the Capitol. Even after Osefo pointed out that most Confederate monuments were constructed in the decades after the Civil War by the Ku Klux Klan โas a revolt against black local powerโ and that โwhile they represent American history, itโs not the good part of American history,โ Pierson refused to back down.
โIt absolutely deserves a place, because that history is good history for this country,โ Pierson said. โAbsolutely. Where would we be today if not for that Civil War? How would people know how special and wonderful this country is?โ
โAre you serious? Do you hear what youโre saying?โ Osefo asked. โDo you know how many people died?โ
โThis is clearly a heated topic,โ moderator Ainsley Earhardt offered. โNo one is racist, no one believes in bigotry.โ
