RECENT UPDATE: It has been confirmed that President Barack Obama will travel to Newtown, Connecticut, today to meet with the families of those killed Friday in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. According to CBS, “The President will travel to Newtown, CT to meet with the families of those who were lost and thank first responders,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. “The President will also speak at an interfaith vigil for families of the victims as well as families from Sandy Hook Elementary scheduled for 7PM EST.” Investigators are still searching for motives in this tragedy that took the lives of 27 people.
From Saturday: Gunman Adam Lanza was found dead next to weapons that were registered to his mother Nancy Lanza. According to medical examiner H. Wayne Carver II, a “long weapon” was used in the shooting and victims were shot more than once; some victims he autopsied had 3 to 11 wounds. “All the wounds that I know of at this point were caused by the one weapon,” Carver said.
State Police have recently released a list with the names and ages of the victims, ranging from 6 to 56, reports the New York Times. it is said that President Barack Obama is setting up for a possible visit early next week.
Police have identified the gunman as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, who grew up in Newtown and killed his mother in her home before opening fire at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday. He killed 20 children, most of them kindergarteners and first-graders, plus six adults before killing himself. As of Saturday, Lanza’s motive had not been revealed.
From Friday: At least 27 people are dead at the hands of an unidentified gunman who opened fire at a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school, reports CNN.
According to a source, the suspect is dead inside a classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary.
Police have so far recovered two weapons from the crime scene. A parent who was inside the school during the time of the shooting said she heard what sounded like 100 rounds being fired.
Reuters reports that the principal and the school psychologist are among the dead. Children and teachers were rushed from the school to a safety zone at a neighboring fire station.
As a result of today’s tragedy, all schools in the Newtown area on lockdown, said police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance.
President Obama has spoken to Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy and FBI Director Robert Mueller to get the latest information on the tragedy, according to CNN.
This school shooting is the second worst in U.S. history, second to 2007 Virginia Tech shooting.
