Actress Quvenzhane Wallis and renown actor Denzel Washington have much to celebrate this morning! Both stars were nominated for Academy Awards.
At 9 years old, Wallis is officially the youngest actress in Oscar history to be recognized. She’s nominated for Best Actress for her role in Beasts of the Southern Wild—which also earned a Best Picture nomination. She will go up against Jessica Chastain who was nominated for her role in Zero Dark Thirty, Jennifer Lawrence for SIlver Linings Playbook, Emmanuelle Riva for Amour, and Naomi Watts for The Impossible.
Washington knows a thing or two about taking home a little gold statue. This marks his fourth Best Actor nomination. He drew critical acclaim last year when he played drug addicted and sex-crazed pilot William ‘Whip’ Whitaker in Flight. The competition is stiff —Bradley Cooper is nominated for his work in Silver Linings Playbook, Daniel Day-Lewis is nominated for his role in Lincoln, Hugh Jackman is nominated for Les Misérable and Joaquin Phoenix for The Master.
Quentin Tarantino’s controversial film Django Unchained earned a Best Picture nomination and will go up against Amour, Argo, Les Misérable, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty and the aforementioned Beast of the Southern Wild.
The awards show will take place live in Los Angeles on February 24.
