Singer LeToya Luckett is making a dramatic debut starring in Single Ladies on VH1, playing snarky music exec Felicia Price. She’s also working on her third album, Until Then, which is slated for a spring 2014 release. Here, the self-described “goofy girl” shares seven tidbits we didn’t know about her.
She considers former Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams and actress Keisha Knight Pulliam her closest celebrity friends.
Michelle and I were at a fundraiser and she came up and she was like, ‘Girl, I admire you. You are just everything.’ I was like ‘Are you serious?’ Then we kept running into each other and one day her manager told me she’d been trying to reach out to me and gave me her number. I was under the hairdryer one time and I gave her a call and we had a wonderful conversation and just kept going from there. We kept going out to eat together—I think we bonded over some Krispy Kreme donuts. Me and Keisha Knight Pulliam have also been close friends for over 11 years.
She’s addicted to Scandal, like the rest of us
I love everything about it. I am going through withdrawals right now as we speak because they just gon’ hit us with a February return? Like end of February?! Two months! Like, I understand we’re having babies and God bless Kerry Washington, but I just need you to come back Liv. I need you Liv!
She’s a total foodie
I have an inner fat girl named Mable. She’s from backhouse Georgia and she loves anything deep-fried. Mable is in fact very upset right now because I have not had lunch and she’s trying to figure out what’s taking so long. Mable wins all the time.
She’s goofy
I love to laugh and smile. My friend’s think something’s wrong with me when I’m quiet. I love cracking up until my stomach hurts. I think people think I’m really serious all the time or very just like ‘I love the Lord’ and I do because he is on my side, but I love to laugh. It heals.
She’s a perfectionist
You don’t want to sit with me in the studio [Luckett is currently finishing up her first album in four years]. I will do a part over 35,000 times until I have it right and then I might come back to it and do it again. I do webisodes on my music-making process and my manager literally had to sit me down and say, ‘Stop thinking. Feel instead of thinking.’
She thinks Beyonce is a unicorn
When I spoke to her after the release of her album I thought she’s a unicorn at this point. I asked her, ‘When did you do this?! You’ve been on tour, you’re a mom, and you’re a wife. You’re traveling the world. When did you have time?’ She was just so excited but she did share how she was kind of scared at first because she didn’t know how people were going to take it. She was having panic attacks and I was like, ‘I’m so glad that you stepped out on faith and allowed God to be in control.’ We talked about it, we prayed and we hung up. I’m so happy for her.
And she calls Beyoncé “BK.”
When we were in elementary school Beyonce used to wear British Knights to school. I used to rag on her like ‘You think you’re cool because it’s your initials. Just wait till they come out with those LL’s.’
