Our May cover star Director Ava DuVernay has received many awards for her film work. And now she can add a special Barbie among those prestigious trophies.
This week Mattel announced they would honor DuVernay, along with five other women, with custom one-of-a-kind Barbies for being great role models to young girls.
The ‘Shereo’ campaign is a collection of Barbies made in the likeness of each of the women and presented to them during the Variety Power of Women Luncheon in New York City.
DuVernay’s Barbie sits poised in a director’s chair with long black braids and funky bangles. She is the only African American and film director to be honored in the collection.
“This brand has a responsibility to continue to honor and encourage powerful female role models who are leaving a legacy for the next generation of glass ceiling breakers,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, General Manager of Barbie.
The DuVernay Barbie will not be sold in stores. But if it were, we would definitely snag one for ourselves!
