Erykah Badu owned the stage last night as she hosted the 2015 Soul Train Awards. Performances by Jill Scott, Babyface, and Tyrese made for one soulful evening. Here are our favorite moments.
(Warning: videos are on auto-play)
Badu’s monologues, her outfits, her swag, and her shade were all epic. This dig on Iggy Azalea will probably live in somebody’s Hall of Fame. After a short monologue on why she couldn’t have rappers on the show, Badu decided to make fake phone calls to artists. One of her “phone calls” was to Australian rapper, Iggy Azalea. “Uh yes? Who is this? Iggy Azalea?” she joked. “Yeah, hey. Oh, no, no, you can come, ’cause what you doin’ is definitely not rap.” Ouch!

Jill Scott was honored with the first-ever Lady of Soul award. Scott brought her poet side to the stage as she accepted her award, reciting words we won’t soon forget. “I never wanted to be sexy for anybody. But I did want to write some sexy stuff for you. What does it matter what I look like? As long as I tell my story and you relate to it. And you laugh with it. And you live with it.”
The Soul Cypher with Chrisette Michelle, Lalah Hathaway, K-Ci, and Eddie Levert was genius. More, please.
In case of any of us had forgotten just how integral to the American songbook Babyface was, the Soul Train awards provided a refresher. Tevin Campbell, Brandy, Boyz II Men, and Fantasia were among the artists who came out to honor the legendary songwriter.
