Queen Latifah is headed back to primetime TV to star in a musical-themed pilot for FOX, Billboard reports.
The Living Single and The Wiz Live star has been tapped by Lee Daniels to play Carlotta, a singing beauty salon owner from Atlanta.
Queen Latifah: ‘Why Shouldn’t the Wiz Be Played By a Woman?’
The project will “follow three young women who form a girl group with hopes of making it in the music industry, and the choices with which they’re faced along the way.”
Latifah will act as their surrogate mother who supports them despite disapproving of their dreams.
FOX CEO and Chairman Dana Walden announced this summer that the pilot is no way connected to Daniels hit series, Empire, and shouldn’t be perceived as such.
“It’s a modern-day music business in Atlanta, and Empire is modern-day music business in New York. It’s not inconceivable that the two worlds could cross. But that’s definitely not Lee’s intention as we go into it.”
The cast includes Dallas starlett Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny of Low Winter Sun and Brittany O’Grady fromThe Messengers as the three girls hoping to make their musical dreams come true.
Some details for the project are still in the works but what we do know makes this project an added addition to our watch list.
