There’s no denying that Black girl magic is, indeed, magical. We are resilient, beautiful, and ooze of power. Of course we know celebrities have their own type of Black girl magic, but its nice to hear them reflect on their own magical moments, even if it’s just the top two or three. We caught up with Brandy who recently dropped the hit single “Beggin & Pleadin” and is the new star of BET’s Zoe Ever After to share her fondest Black girl magic moments.
“Whitney Houston was all black girl magic for me,” says Brandy. “She represented the dream and the possibility that anything that I was striving for would happen.” In fact, one of her favorite black girl magic moments with the singer occurred two days before she passed. “I was able to tell Whitney how much I loved her, and how much I wanted to be more apart of her life,” says Brandy. “She shared her feeling for me and my family. I’m so thankful for that conversation.”
Another standout Black girl magic moment occurred a few years earlier in 1997 when Brandy performed in an updated version of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical of Cinderella. Performing with an all-star, multi-racial cast was awesome, but Brandy enjoyed inspiring other young girls to be Black Cinderellas too.
But perhaps her most personal Black girl magic moment was giving birth to her daughter, Sy’rai Iman Smith. “Giving birth wasn’t about me,” says Brandy. “It’s my daughter’s journey. I was just helping her through it. The real magic was helping her facilitate the journey.”
