You’ve had to be living under a rock to not see any of celebrity hairstylist Monaé Everett’s looks. She’s one of most sought-after hair gurus who has been fortunate enough to create beautiful hairstyles for some of Hollywood’s leading ladies including Taraji P Henson, Gladys Knight, Mariah Carey and a host of others.
Monaé earned her cosmetology license shortly after turning 18 and hasn’t looked back. Now, with years of experience behind her—she’s also the author of Stunning Braids: Step-by-Step Guide to Gorgeous Statement Hairstyles, an easy-to-follow instructions and step-by-step book of photos for creating beautiful looks—she’s primed more than ever to give back. Here, she dishes on how she dived into the industry (head first!) and what new hair trends she’s getting into this season.
ESSENCE.com: How did you get involved in the industry?
Monaé Everett: I’ve always been opinionated about beauty. People would tell me that if I couldn’t do better I should keep my opinion to myself. So I enrolled in cosmetology school while I was in college. It was a great way for me to express my creativity and support myself through school. A bonus perk is that I’m able to make women look great, and in turn they feel even better about themselves.

ESSENCE.com: What’s the hardest part about getting a celeb red carpet ready?
Everett: Many times you’re under a major time and space constraint. Many times the artists (hair, makeup, manicurist, wardrobe stylists) also have to work on the celerity at the same time. We have to ensure that we each provide cohesive look. My job is to make sure that the hairstyle is a beautiful accessory that accentuates and is and not overwhelming to the celebrity.
ESSENCE.com: Which hair trends are you into this season?
Everett: This season is all about braided styles. Braids are so versatile, they are a great way dress up any style. Braids can be high fashion or great for a night out on the town. I’m also digging the versatility of bob length haircuts!
ESSENCE.com: What are your go-to hair products for most celebs?
Everett: My must haves in my kits are Aquage Beyond Shine Spray, Sebastian Reshaper (holding spray), Bumble and Bumble Dryspun (dry texture spray) and Osis Dust It (texture powder).
ESSENCE.com:What are you most excited about this red carpet season?
Everett: I am excited to see the acceptance of all textures of hair. I would love to see more textured hairstyles, especially updos and braided styles.
