Andra Day says that ESSENCE Festivalโwhere she will return to perform for the second yearโis the perfect place to rise up this July 4th weekend. โThe feeling of community and camaraderie that you experience when youโre thereโฆthere ainโt no hateration or holleration in this dancerie!โ says the retro-soul chanteuse and current ESSENCE cover girl.
โPeople are really supporting each other and what theyโve got going on. Itโs empowering. I tell peopleโwomen, men of all racesโif you experience this, you leave there feeling like, โOkay, I can accomplish anything.โโ

Day had never been to the Festivalโor even New Orleansโbefore performing last year. โYou get a sense when youโre there that the festival has done so much for the city of New Orleans,โ she says, โespecially after [Hurricane] Katrina and everything it went through. Itโs such a special time. Thereโs really just so much to see and so much to do, so much shopping with all these up-and-coming businesses. Itโs amazing.โ

Puff Daddy, Common and Kendrick Rock the Mic on Our ESSENCE Fest Playlist
This year Day steps up from the Superlounge to the Mainstage. โComing back this year and being on the MainStage is exciting,โ she says. โI donโt exactly know what to expect. Iโve never played an arena of this size. Itโs huge. But I just got a great piece of advice from Steve Harvey. He said, โDonโt change anything, but just play to the back of the room.โ And I was like, โOkay, got it.โโ
Who is Day excited to see perform herself? โFirst Iโm excited to see Judith Hill, because sheโs actually a good friend of mine. Sheโs like a sister. Of course Iโm excited to see Mariah [Carey]. I am so excited to see Maxwell. Kendrick is always amazing; I canโt wait to see him as well.โ
