Equal representation of all races, genders and sexual orientations has been at the top of the priority list for the technology industry over the past few years. Now Google is taking another step towards ensuring the ultimate inclusion.
As emojis have quickly become a staple feature in text messages, e-mails and social media communication methods for the majority of the world, the tech giant is looking to build on the representation of working women within the suite of visual messages.
Michelle Obama Suggests a New Emoji to Empower Girls
In a recent proposal as part of Google’s efforts to contribute to the global women’s equality movement, the company detailed plans to add to the emoji line.
“Google wants to increase the representation of women in emoji and would like to propose that Unicode implementers do the same. Our proposal is to create a new set of emoji that represents a wide range of professions for women and men with a goal of highlighting the diversity of women’s careers and empowering girls everywhere.”
Reportedly developed by a group of Google employees, the 13 new proposed emoji categories will reportedly depict women as career professionals in several industries including education, entertainment, food service and healthcare. Although emojis to better depict working class men are also included in the proposal, the company emphasized that the main focus of the potential expansion is to provide better representation of women in the workforce.
Emojis have undergone several revamps to better reflect the multicultural technology consumer over the past few years, with most notable in recent history being the addition of varying emoji skin tones to choose from.
