“My EIC Life” is a dose of marvelous musings straight from ESSENCE’s editor-in-chief, Vanessa K. De Luca. It’s your glimpse into her oh-so-fabulous life, which is filled with amazing people, awesome must-haves and endless inspiration.
#Proud16: The Wall Street Journal asked me to weigh in on the controversy surrounding that image of 16 West Point Black women cadets with raised fists that went viral. The investigation into their actions, and the finding that they did not violate any military regulations, made national headlines. You can read my op-ed here.
Eye-popping beauty hack: It’s taken me a while to find a natural-looking but polished routine for making my eyes pop. These treats — eyebrow pencil/brush by @TarteCosmetics, eyeliner by @YSLbeauty and mascara by @Covergirl have made my morning ritual easier than ever.
Work break: Whenever I need to clear my head during the workday, I take a walk around the block. Lucky for us, our office building sits right beside the Hudson River, with gorgeous views like this. Sunshine, water and fresh air are free—and good for the soul.
Black Broadway: Finally got to see our April cover star, Audra McDonald, in her new Broadway musical Shuffle Along. It’s amazing to see so much melanin on the Great White Way. Check out this cast photo from our recent issue. Congrats to Audra, George C. Wolfe and Savion Glover, and the entire cast on an electrifying show!
ColorComm’s 5th: I’m on the board of ColorComm, a networking organization for women of color in communications, and this week we celebrated our 5th anniversary with a luncheon at the storied Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC! I love that the group is led by the young phenom, Lauren Wesley Wilson, who recently wrote this great piece for ESSENCE.com on breaking the myth about women helping women at work.
