Facebook Messenger’s emojis are getting a huge makeover. “Messenger is bringing over 1,500 newly designed Messenger emojis to the world,” the company released in a statement. “We’re diversifying the genders to create a more balanced mix that’s more representative of our world.”

With the revamped Messenger emojis, users will have the option of choosing their own default skin tone – because white male is not always the norm – and will also have the ability to be used across both Android and iOS platforms. Gone are the days of receiving random blank boxes!

Gender bias and lack of representation have been call outs from emojis as they have changed the way people communicate with one another. “Whether it’s a smiley face to show you’re happy, a thumbs up, or a pizza when hungry, emojis are a fun, easy way to express yourself when words just aren’t enough… However, not all platforms have kept up with emoji standards as they’ve evolved,” states Facebook.
