Many celebrities and pop culture influencers today tend to steer clear of weighing in with their thoughts on political issues when put on the spot, but actress Kerry Washington isn’t one of them.
Aside from playing a staple television character whose personal and professional life is constantly at the center of all White House happenings with her starring role on Scandal, Kerry has also consistently been an active celebrity voice within the political community for much of her career. Most recently, Kerry was one of a handful of famous faces to take part in the 2016 United State of Women Summit in Washington, DC, where she was a speaker alongside First Lady Michelle Obama.

The Huffington Post caught up with Kerry just before she made her way inside for the event and when put on the spot about whether or not she thinks America is ready for a woman of color in the oval office, she didn’t hold back.“Wow! I don’t know. We’re in a really challenging place as a country right now,” she told the outlet. “Some of the rhetoric around women, around immigrants, around people of color is breathtaking to me.”
As for who she thinks would be a good candidate to get the job done as the first female president of color, Kerry says California Attorney General Kamala Harris has what it takes. “Somebody that I’m a huge fan of, but she’s running for Senate right now, is Kamala Harris in California. I think she’s extraordinary. I do think she could be president one day.”
Great choice, Kerry! Who would be your pick for America’s first female president of color?
