The recent disturbing killings of African-American men at the hands of police has caused the Black community to unite like never before. Now, a powerful photo from one of the most widely covered protests of the last week is making waves across the Internet.
The fatal shooting of Alton Sterling ignited his Baton Rouge community and resulted in a weekend of peaceful protests as residents took to the streets to call for justice. While those who participated in the most recent protests were said to have kept things from getting violent, tensions with police reached a peak when dozens of protestors were arrested and jailed on Sunday afternoon, including civil rights activist DeRay McKesson.
As arrests were being made, a Reuters photographer captured a powerful shot of a young Black woman in a flowing dress as she stood face-to-face with police officers in riot gear. According to the photographer, the woman refused to move from the highway per police orders and was placed under arrest moments later without incident on either side.
Though simple, the photo speaks volumes about the ongoing struggle between the police and the African-American community.
