You can’t go wrong with a chin-length bob, but after 10 years, our Entertainment Director Cori Murray was ready for a change.
“I love a bob, I love a bob,” she said mournfully. “Bobs are classic; they can be sleek and edgy when the hair is straight or playful and romantic with big loose curls.” But when you’re given the opportunity to have the same hands that finess FLOTUS’ shampoo commercial-ready locks in your hair, what you don’t do is turn it down.
Celebrity hairstylist Johnny Wright is the man behind Michelle Obama’s gorgeous hairstyles on the October 2016 issues of ESSENCE and InStyle. This past Wednesday (Sept 14), both brands teamed up to convert Murray’s fine, natural, color-treated hair into a chic undercut just in time for fall.

“When [Wright] gave me a choice of ‘just bangs’ or something drastic, I figured here was my time to leap,” Murray said. “Going through my pics for TBT, I often realize I wear my hair in two styles and I wanted to see myself differently.” With a new super trendy short cut, we’d say Murray got her wish.
“I am not a big section person, I don’t section my cuts too much,” Wright said as he prepped Murray’s hair. “I think of it as I carve cuts into the head.” He then proceeded to cut off huge pieces of hair off the sides with a straight razor. “Razors give the hair a little texture. I really want to show off the haircut and the only way to be able to do that is to show off the texture you get with the haircut.”
