Eighties pop/dance superstar Jody Watley seems more relevant now than ever! Not only do her late-'80s megahits like "Looking For a New Love," "Real Love" and "Don't You Want Me" still sound as danceable and funky today (please re-listen to "Still a Thrill." Eighties pop/dance superstar Jody Watley seems more relevant now than ever! Not only do her late-’80s megahits like “Looking For a New Love,” “Real Love” and “Don’t You Want Me” still sound as danceable and funky today (please re-listen to “Still a Thrill.” Hot!), Watley’s signature beauty look — brazen red lips; cat-eye black liner; bold brows and crimped hair — can be seen on runways and red carpets everywhere. Watley got her start on “Soul Train” in the 1970s, when she was only 14 years old! In 1977, “Soul Train” host Don Cornelius selected the audience favorite to join his new R&B group, Shalimar. The group scored several hits, including “Second Time Around,” but in ’84, Watley left to pursue a solo career. Good thing she did! Her debut album, “Jody Watley” scored her three top ten hits and a 1988 Best New Artist Grammy; while her second, 1989’s “Larger Than Life,” sold over four million copies, and spawned three more top ten hits and a slew of MTV Video Music Awards. After helping to revolutionize music videos and the dance music genre, Watley would spend the next couple of decades releasing independent albums and generally being diva-licious. Jody Watley, you’re fierce, fly and fabulous — and we salute you!
