A Harriett Tubman biopic is finally here and the only thought we have is: what the heck took so long?
Focus Features has released the first official trailer for the upcoming Harriet Tubman movie Harriet, starring Tony Award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo as the historical figure. The film hails from Black Nativity filmmaker Kasi Lemmons, who also directed episodes of Luke Cage and Shots Fired, working from a screenplay by Lemmons and Gregory Allen Howard.
Based on the story of iconic Harriet Tubman, Harriet tells the extraordinary tale of the freedom fighter’s escape from slavery, and how she changed the course of Black history forever.
Erivo, knowing the importance of the role even tweeted out, “I hope I make you proud.”
Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monáe, Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, and Clarke Peters also star in the biopic of the abolitionist who led—directly or indirectly—approximately 150 people to freedom on the Underground Railroad.
The film comes at a time when our stories need to be told more than ever.
Harriet hits theaters on November 1, 2019. Watch the full trailer here.
