Today, the nominations for the 2022 Tony Awards presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing were announced by the award-winning actress Adrienne Warren and three-time Tony nominee Joshua Henry.
This year marks the American Theatre Wing’s 75th annual Tony Awards, and with 11, the autobiographical Strange Loop leads all nominations, Paradise Square and the Michael Jackson musical MJ received 10, and for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf grabbed seven.
Throughout the YouTube telecast, there were many inspiring moments on display from people of color during past Tony Awards. Warren looked back on a quote by Audra Ann McDonald after earning her sixth Tony Award in 2014 for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.
“I want to thank all the shoulders of the strong and brave and courageous women that I am standing on,” McDonald said.
“It made me realize what I stand on,” Warren said of McDonald’s speech. “And all the glass ceilings that have been shattered so that I could pass through.”
Hosted by Ariana Debose, this year’s awards ceremony will be held at Radio City Music Hall on June 12 and will feature two parts: a one-hour awards segment streamed on Paramount+, followed by a three-hour television broadcast on CBS.
