Earlier today Lupita Nyong’o graced the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood event with bronzed lids, lightly blushed cheeks and coral lips—a perfect look for an afternoon luncheon. “I wanted to echo her dress by making the makeup flirty and fun,” says makeup artist Nick Barose, who told us exactly how he created the look that we were dying to copy. “It’s not too busy that it competes with the print. And it’s a luncheon so we didn’t go on full glam, but more laid back and cool, perfect for day time fun.” Indeed, her soft and pretty makeup complimented her multi-colored Peter Pilotto bodycon dress and green nails by Deborah Lippmann. Here, a step-by-step guide on how to mirror Nyong’o’s BWIH standout beauty moment.
Barose began by prepping her face with Lancôme Advanced Genifique by gently massaging it all over. Next, Barose applied Lancôme Miracle Cushion Foundation (set to launch in April) throughout her face. “It’s a sheer and easy to wear foundation that covers well and looks fresh like second skin. It’s so perfect for spring,” says Barose. Next, Barose applied a small amount of Lancôme Genifique Eye Light Pearl. Once set, Barose dabbed small amount of Lancôme La base Pro on Lupita’s T zone to control shine.

To conceal dark circles, Barose used Lancôme Effacernes in Dark Suede, then he dusted a bit of Lancôme Translucence Loose Powder on Lupita’s T zone. “Lupita has gorgeous skin so I always want to use foundation to show off that famous Lupita glow instead of covering it,” he says. “A formula like this is perfect because it makes skin look flawless and her glow peeks through.”
Barose played with the shape of the star’s brows by filling it in with Lancôme Les Sourcils Definis in 106, and then applied Lancôme Aquatique Eye Makeup Primer in 06 on her lids to keep the look longwearing and smooth. Next, Barose used Lancôme Color Design 5 Pan Eyeshadow in Coral Crush on the upper lids, and applied it on her brow bones to highlight her face. To echo the graphic print of the dress, Barose used Lancôme ArtLiner 24 in Black Diamond to create graphic cat eyes, and winging them out with two coats of Lancôme Hypnôse.
For a pop of color on the apples of Lupita’s cheeks, Barose applied Lancôme Blush Subtil in Shimmer Tamarind, then he stained her lips with Fearless, a matte bright orange color, and then topped it with Shine Lover in 140. Finally, for extra definition, Barose traced Lancôme Le Crayon lip Pencil in Sheer Chocolat along the edges of Lupita’s lips.
