On Sunday, Sterling K. Brown accepted the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, receiving a standing ovation as he took the stage.
However, the This Is Us actor didn’t get to give his entire acceptance speech. Brown thanked his co-stars, joking that they were “the best white family a brother could have,” before being cut off.
But, you can’t rain on Sterling K. Brown’s parade.
Backstage as he took questions from reporters, Brown was asked if he would like to finish his speech and took the opportunity to do so.
The actor thanked his manager, the writers behind This Is Us, then thanked his wife with a heartfelt message. “Ryan Michelle Bathe…you’re everything. You make my life worth living and you gave me two of the most beautiful things that god has ever put on this planet, my sons. Andrew Jason Sterling Brown, Amaré Michael Ryan Christian Brown, your daddy loves you with the strength of a thousand suns. I’ll see you Monday after work, love you”
Brown is the first Black actor in nearly 20 years to take home the award for lead actor in a drama series.
