It’s official—awards season 2016 is in full swing!
Last night, live from the International Ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the 73rd Annual Golden Globes kicked off with four-time host, Ricky Gervais, tossing shade in every direction. That was expected because really, that’s how he rolls and Hollywood seems to love every bit of it. Even though he started with, “Relax, I’m going to try and be nice…” he wasn’t, as usual, and nobody was spared.
Stars Shine at the 2016 Golden Globe Awards
Everybody was in the house — Viola, Regina, Queen, Will & Jada, Taraji & Terrance (and the Lyon “cubs”), Uzo, David O., Morgan, Michael B., Laverne Cox, The Rock, Kevin Hart, Zendaya and so many more. Sadly, Idris Elba, who was up for two statues, was unable to attend the festivities as he’s injured his back (feel better!). Did you see J-Lo, in that fierce yellow situation, though? And how about Jamie Foxx and his lovely daughter, Corinne, who was a vision as Miss Golden Globe 2016? Oh, and speaking of Jamie, did he really announce that Straight Outta Compton, which was not nominated for Best Original Song, had actually won the award? Hilarious. (Spectre was the actual winner).
There were a few other moments that struck a cord, like when Sylvester Stallone won for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his work in Creed. Initially, the ballroom erupted (with the theme from Rocky playing in the background), but when he closed out his speech by thanking his “imaginary friend,” Rocky Balboa, many people noticed that he’d forgotten to mention a couple of names — mainly Creed’s writer/director Ryan Coogler and his costars. He caught himself, and came back to the mic to thank Ryan as well as Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson. Unfortunately, it was a bit too late to make the live broadcast. Bummer.

Tom Hanks came to the stage to introduce Denzel Washington, the recipient of the coveted Cecil B. deMille Award. Everybody was on their feet! Along with his wife, Pauletta (who joked that he really did need his glasses!), and three of their four children, Washington thanked his agents — past and present — his parents and with prompting from his wife, again, he thanked “the family,” as in his. It was quick and simple and well…he’s Denzel, so it was all good!
Later, everybody in the ballroom roared with cheers and laughter when Taraji P. Henson was awarded Best Supporting Actress in a Television, Drama, for her spot-on portrayal as Empire’s Cookie Lyon. She even handed out cookies to folks along her path to the stage. Her speech was classic Taraji — “Who knew that playing an ex‑convict would take me all around the globe?” she began. “I thought it would be Queenie [her Oscar-nominated role in Benjamin Button]. Will [Smith], I thought it would be my character from Karate Kid. But it’s Cookie, who spent 17 years in jail for selling crack.”
Backstage, she shared what she was feeling, and thinking, when she won. “I just never expected them to call my name,” she said. “I never put that much on it. I document these events and have fun because you never know how it is going to pan out. When they called my name, it was visceral — Well, the cookies are here, I guess I should hand them out. It was a spontaneous moment!
