Early Thursday morning, the 2014 Golden Globe nominations were announced. And like yesterday’s SAG nominations, many of our stars were recognized for their work in front of and behind the camera.
Both Idris Elba and Chiwetel Ejiofor were nominated twice this year. The leading men received recognition in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama category for their roles in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and 12 Years a Slave, respectively. The gentlemen also earned nominations in the Best Actor in a Mini-Series or TV Movie category—Elba for his role on Luther and Ejiofor for his role in Dancing on the Edge.
In the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture category, Lupita Nyong’o from 12 Years a Slave earned a well-deserved nomination.
For the films overall, 12 Years a Slave landed nominations in Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director (Steve McQueen), Best Original Score and Best Screenplay categories. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom picked up nods for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (“Ordinary Love”).
When it comes to television, there weren’t any surprises. Scandal‘s Kerry Washington nabbed a nomination for Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama while Don Cheadle earned a nod for Best Actor, TV Series Comedy for his role on House of Lies, which also earned a nomination for Best TV Series, Drama. And lastly, the spooky series American Horror Story: Coven, starring Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe, picked up a nomination for Best TV Miniseries or Movie along with Dancing on the Edge.
The 71st annual Golden Globe Awards will be handed on Sunday January 12th on NBC.
