A bus full of unsuspecting tourists got a major Hollywood ending to their sightseeing trip Sunday night when Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel welcomed them into the Dolby Theatre during the 89th annual awards show, on live television.
The stunt was especially memorable for an engaged couple, Gary and Vicky, who were treated to a mock wedding ceremony officiated by none other than Denzel Washington.
Gary was the first tourist led into the theater, under the guise of viewing Oscars memorabilia. Leading the Chicago resident to the front row, Kimmel introduced him to such stars as Nicole Kidman, Ryan Gosling, and Octavia Spencer.
As Gary captured the moment on his cellphone, Kimmel told him, “You know we’re on TV, so you don’t need to do that.”
“I know, but I want to,” he replied.
Kimmel soon turned his attention to Vicky, asking who her favorite actor was.
“That man right there,” she said, gesturing to Washington and laughing.
The Fences director and star gamely leaped to his feet, posed for a selfie, and said, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. Kiss the bride.”
“He’s Denzel, so it’s legal,” Kimmel quipped. He even secured Jennifer Aniston’s sunglasses as a wedding gift. “You don’t need those,” he said, “it’s dark.”
