Black love continues to reign supreme this awards season.
At the 89th Academy Awards ceremony, the first televised award of the evening went to actor Mahershala Ali, who won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his starring role in the hit film Moonlight.
On stage Ali gave a poignant acceptance speech that graciously gave thanks to his co-stars and the team behind the film. He closed out his remarks with a beautiful thank you to his wife, artist Amatus Sami-Karim, who gave birth to their first child, a daughter, just four days ago.
“I just want to thank my wife who was in her third trimester during awards season,” Ali said. “We just had a daughter four days ago. I just want to thank her for being such a soldier through this process and really carrying me through it all.”
Aww!
Ali had been singing his wife’s praises all night. While walking the red carpet, Ali told ET that her recent courage in the delivery room had inspired him greatly.
“She did not [have an epidural]. She had it natural,” he said. “I’m telling you, women are the toughest beings on the planet — incredible seeing this eight-pound being come out of your body and just work that out. Unbelievable.”
Ali also made fans melt with his tribute to Sami-Karim during his Critic’s Choice Award win in December.
How can you not love their love?
