The highly esteemed Screen Actors Guild announced its nominees this morning for its annual awards show, and we couldn’t help but notice three talented women on the list: Cicely Tyson, Viola Davis and newcomer Uzo Aduba.
The legendary Tyson is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie for her role in The Trip to Bountiful. The Lifetime flick tells the story of Carrie Watts (Tyson), an older woman who makes a solo bus trip to her hometown. Davis is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her portrayal as Annalise Keating in Shonda Rhimes’s newest project, How to Get Away With Murder. She is up against Claire Danes (Homeland), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Maggie Smith (Downtown Abbey) and Robin Wright (House of Cards).
Breakout star Aduba has turned into a fan favorite in her role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in Netflix’s prison dramedy, Orange is the New Black. She is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, along with contenders Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation).
