Beautycon LA is an opportunity for novices, influencers, and aficionados alike to convene in one space and discuss all things beauty. It’s also an opportunity for consumers to interact with brands, and discover new products to suit their beauty needs.
This weekend’s event was no exception, and for Black women in particular, there was a number of Black owned brands to explore. Of course some of our well-known favorites like SheaMoisture, Camille Rose, and the Mane Choice were there repping for Black girl curls. And brands like The Lip Bar, Beauty Bakerie, and The Crayon Case had makeup covered, while The Honey Pot Company was there to take care of your feminine reproductive and vaginal needs.
But there were many new and indie brands worth checking out. And if you weren’t able to make it to La La Land for the festival, we’ve got the tea on a handful of the Black-owned brands you should get to know (and love).
Ace Beauté
Ace Beauté launched with inclusivity in mind. Offering products to complement every skin tone, and with Black women in mind, it’s a must shop for high quality products that won’t destroy your savings.
E~honey Skin Care
E~honey Skin Care was the result of one college student’s stressful senior year and a bout with acne that left her wanting a long term solution. So when Erika Clark founded the brand, she did it with specially formulated products to help women of color tackle the same skin issues she had.
SkinStatic
Olamide Olowe’s SkinStatic is here to help you supercharge your skin results. Combining “skin science with technology first solutions” through at-home devices, the company is aiming to take skincare to the next level when it officially launches later this year.
Mielle Organics
Started by Monique Rodriguez in her kitchen, Mielle Organics is easily becoming a widely-known brand for Black hair care. Expanding from one product—her hero growth oil—to dozens of products across eight collections, Mielle is a go-to for keeping strands healthy.
Uncle Funky’s Daughter
When Renee Morris acquired Uncle Funky’s Daughter in 2014 she was already a self-proclaimed “Funky Junky,” having loved the products for her natural hair. Today, she shares their curl magic with all of us kinky, curly, and wavy girls.
Taliah Waajid Natural Hair Care
If you’re new to Taliah Waajid Natural Hair Care then you might be new to your natural curls and coils altogether. It’s okay, everyone’s hair journey is unique. And Taliah Waajid’s unique collection of hair care products will remind you daily why you embrace your beautiful natural hair.
Bold Hold
The brainchild of The Hair Diagram’s Tamika Gibson, Bold Hold is meant to keep your unit intact. Offering adhesives, lace removers, and the ever-popular skin protectant, the brand is a go-to for the ladies who love their lace fronts and want to apply them safely.
Curls Dynasty
Formulated with natural ingredients and made to hydrate even the driest of hair, Curls Dynasty products are easy to use and easy to love. Founded in 2014 by Nickie Nougaisse, their products offer much needed slip for thirsty curls.
CurlyChic
The founders of CurlyChic probably didn’t realize a family barbecue discussion about products for their childrens’ hair would lead to the launch of a much needed brand in the Black hair care space. But it did. And years after debuting CurlyKids, they introduced CurlyChic, formulated for the older gals who needed better products for their curls.
UOMA Beauty
UOMA Beauty launched this past spring on a retail rollercoaster with just highs, and hasn’t come down yet. Founded by LVMH beauty vet Sharon Chuter, it’s a brand by us for all. It’s prestige color cosmetics will easily be your new favorite must-haves.
Silked
Silked is a company that every Black woman needs to know for the health of her hair while she sleeps. Keep your strands tangle-free and moisturized even if you go bonnet-less (yes, some ladies do this). And the smart jersey back keeps the case from sliding all over the place like many other silk and satin pillows do.
