When fashion week takes over New York City it’s infectious. The clothes, the hair, the makeup, the personality, and the feeling just spills into the streets like a tidal wave that can’t be stopped. Residents of the city don’t always love it, but they can’t deny that it’s always interesting.
From statuesque models on the subway moving from show to show in full beats and combat boots, to men in hot pink furs with hot pink hair in 80 degree weather, it’s a vibe. But you can’t be everywhere so you will miss some things. Here are a few of the things worth seeing at yesterday’s shows.
A Clean Faced Billy Porter
Initially Billy Porter was camera shy, peeking out of the door behind the scenes at The Blonds runway show. But he was all smiles and all love for ESSENCE, posing for the camera sans his show makeup. How is it possible that he looks just as flawless with no beat as he does with a full face?
Black Women Photogs
There aren’t a ton of Black female professional photographers capturing the wonder of the shows this season, but the few out there are representing. We caught two (not including ESSENCE’s photog) outside of Spring Studios and in midtown, doing their thing, natural and beautiful. These ladies look so great, they should get in front of the camera more often.
Karrueche Induced Traffic Jam
Just before the start of the 3.1 Phillip Lim show on Franklin Street in Williamsburg, Karrueche Tran and Victor Cruz showed up, and this happened. Cars were honking, bikes were breaking short, and photographers didn’t care. The line of cars remained until those beauty shots of Karrueche (and Victor) were nailed, and pretty much into the start of the show. This quiet block in Brooklyn was not ready.
Models Dolled Up On Trains
Most of us have grown accustomed to seeing uber tall ladies in torn jeans and Doc Martens twice a year, New York Fashion Week spring/summer shows and New York Fashion Week fall/winter shows. But it’s still always delightful to see models on the train still in their show hair and makeup looks, usually on their way to their next show. It adds to the allure of fashion week for everyone not in the industry.
The Nails At The Blonds
The models at The Blonds’ Monday evening show were just as excited as show-goers about their decked out nails. In hues of red, gold, black and more, with crushed jewel adornments and flowers, the nails were part of the show-stopping looks. They were on brand for The Blonds, and another reason to get happy about fashion week beauty on day five.
