If you weren’t at Sir John’s first ever New York Fashion Week event, FOMO has probably already settled in. The makeup artist, known for sculpting the faces of Beyoncé, Joan Smalls and countless others, merged art and cosmetics like never before inside New York City’s Mercantile Annex.
Surrounded by art pieces that mirror his most famous work, Sir John hosted a tour de force makeup master class, where attendees were able to watch the world renowned expert in real time. Since his clientele list includes a variation of shades, we weren’t surprised to see a beautiful brown woman as one of the lucky models.
And as expected, there was so much to soak in. During the two hour tutorial, Sir name-dropped a slew of products that he swears by for frequent use. From all natural oils to designer staples, these must haves will bring you closer to a red carpet makeup look that catches everyone’s eye.
Essential Rose Oil: For starters, Sir John emphasizes the importance of a healthy diet and skincare regimen. Without either of these, your makeup won’t looks its best. Rose oil is a great all natural option because it repairs and calms skin without leaving any residue behind.
M.A.C. Taupe Blush, $17, maccosmetics.com
If you’re not ready to let go of contouring, make sure you’re doing it right! One of the biggest mistakes Sir John sees women make is using bronzer or other shimmery shades to contour their cheekbones. Instead, use cooler shades that naturally recede and make your facial features look hollow and slim. Warmer shades do the opposite. His go-to product for sculpting cheekbones is M.A.C.’s taupe blush, which looks amazing on brown skin.
Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder, $20, sephora.com
The celebrity MUA also called this Sephora staple his favorite finishing powder because it doesn’t leave an ashy afterglow like others.
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, $29, sephora.com
And if you’re a lazy beauty, Sir John recommends using NARS’ creamy concealer as a quick and easy foundation.
What’s a makeup master class without at least one vibrant color product? I’m still thinking about the Tom Ford lavender shadow Sir John used on this model. Purple looks divine on brown skin, so I’ve already found the matching eyeshadow quad ($82, nordstrom.com) for those who want to recreate this look.
