For far too long Black women have been marginalized by mainstream media and companies. From the lack of products that adequately meet our beauty needs to not being represented in ads and commercials, we’ve often been made to feel othered.
Thankfully the tide has begun to turn and the beauty industry is becoming more inclusive, with brands being more committed to ensuring everyone is represented.
Dove is one such company.
The 60-year-old brand recognizes the role they’ve played in establishing such harmful ideas of beauty. So in an effort to address these issues, they’ve formed the Dove Black Beauty Alliance — a group of influential change agents dedicated to impacting Black women and girls in a healthy, positive way.
Dove announced the news at this year’s ESSENCE Fest and said they are shaping the alliance by, “listening to Black women’s perspectives on what beauty looks like through their eyes.” To help kick off the initiative the brand created a short video, #BeautyLooksLike, featuring several Black women defining beauty on their own terms.
