New York City rolled out the red carpet last night for the annual Women of the Year Awards, and Lupita Nyong’O was in attendance sporting an earth-toned lip and fiery clay shadow, courtesy of famed celebrity face painter, Nick Barose. The elegant and understated look made a case for what seems to be becoming a new beauty trend— red shadow, and we’ve got to admit, we kind of love it!
“The advantage of having darker skin is that you can rock colors that other skintones can not wear—red toned eyeshadow is flattering on darker skin because it compliments the red in your skin tone so while it look dramatic, it doesn’t clash and make it look weird, perfect way to make statement,” says Barose.
To create the look, Barose used Lancôme Colour Design 5 Pan Eyeshadow Palette in Ruby Affairs; and suggests that “if you are looking to make your shadow appear more vibrant, use an eye shadow primer that’s a shade lighter than your normal shade to create the perfect neutral canvas for the color.” On Luptia’s lips, Barose used a plum lipstick with a deep red base, noting that “since the eyes are somewhat brght, I used a deeper garnet tone like Lancôme’s new limited edition Color Design Lipstick in Bow & Arrow, so the tones don’t compete.”
Barose says the keep to red toned eye shadow is to “keep it mostly on upper lids and avoid using it on lower lash lines; it shouldn’t frame all around the eyes but just on upper lids only and anchor it with black liner to still define eyes” To comlete the look added a hint of color to the apples of Nyong’O’s cheeks using Lancôme Blush Subtil in Midnight Rose.
The moral of the story: red is no longer a shade reserved only for lips.
