Last night, Gugu Mbatha-Raw won best actress at the African American Film Critics Association awards for her role in Belle, but her performance isn’t the only thing making waves. We loved her retro look so much we reached out to her makeup artist Nick Barose for the details on her 40’s flair.
Barose started by smoothing out her complexion by applying Armani Maestro Cream Compact in 5 with a Beauty Blender to create an even texture. Next, he dusted on translucent loose powder followed by Armani Sun Fabric (#400) around perimeter of the star’s face.
For Mbatha-Raw’s eyes, Barose filled in her brows to add fuller, slight arches similar to 40’s movie stars by using Charlotte Tilbury Brow Lift in Cara D. Then he used Gucci Power Liquid Liner in Ionic Black to trace along upper lash lines. He also used Sisley Phyto 4 Ombre Eye palette in Dream on her upper lids and the darker colour in the crease. “To add extra drama,” he adds, “I used Eylure False lashes. The shape is longer and more dense on the outer corners so it pulls the shape of the eyes and make it more cat like and vintage-y.”
For her lips, Barose applied One To Watch from MAC new Spring 15 Trends Forecast Palette and then had the star tap part of it off to give it more of a stain effect. To finish her lips, Barose applied La Mer’s lip balm on her top lip for a slight sheen thats not too shiny.
Lastly, to compliment Mbatha-Raw’s pink lips, he added a touch of Surratt Beauty artistique Blush in Guimauve on the apples of her cheeks. “A sheer pop of pink on cheeks adds a perfect canvas for the pink lips, nothing say Spring like flushed, sun kissed pink cheeks,” says Barose. “I love this deeper pink blush for medium to medium dark skin.”
