If you’re a bonafide beauty girl who counts makeup swatching and multi-masking as a hobby, this year’s Beautycon NYC convention was on your calendar. The annual gathering brings together the hottest industry insiders to hob knob with their loyal followings, including drop dead gorgeous celebs like Kelly Rowland.
The singer and actress, who played host for a series of panel discussions, chatted with us backstage about a bevy of topics — including her love for perusing YouTube hair tutorials.
“Naptural85 has helped me learn how to twist my son’s hair. I really like the way she talks you through everything and she’s really sweet,” Rowland told ESSENCE.
Besides mastering a twist out on her little one, Kelly has also manuevered her way through a beauty regimen that was heavily impacted by motherhood. “My routine is definitely shorter and I always think of things that are easy for me to maintain,” she quipped.
We all know how the hormones of motherhood can send you into a beauty frenzy and Kelly shares she experienced similar skin and hair changes like most women. To maintain her brown glow, Kelly swears by facialist Shani Darden, who is the expert behind other fresh faced celebs we see on the red carpet.
Kelly’s consolidated routine also extends to her hair, which has gone through quite the evolution since her Destiny’s Child days.
“Anything that had a lace front wig was a bad choice,” says the style star of her biggest red carpet regrets. “For me, lace front wigs just never worked out.”
These days, Kelly revels in embracing a more natural approach to her hair, something her husband (Tim Witherspoon) appreciates.
“My husband loves my hair back off my face,” she adds. “Your features are pretty, so why would you want to cover it with hair? I finally get it. If I shave my head bald tomorrow, I might get pregnant then. He would love that.”
As for other beauty news, you can look forward to her previously announced product line in 2017.
“It felt like there was a really strong market place for different skin textures and colors and we are very excited,” she said of the upcoming collaboration with makeup artist Shieka Daley. First up: lashes!
You know her lash game is always on point, so stay tuned for a launch date because it’s guaranteed to fly off the shelves.
