Most women await fall’s arrival with anticipation because of an angst to pull out their coveted chic cool-weather wear—that leather DKNY moto jacket, those suede thigh high boots and that scarf purchased on vacation in Milan years ago. While I do love dressing in cozy sweaters, my favorite perk of the season is lipstick. Since the sun goes down earlier, I like the think that the darker lipsticks that I typically reserve for evening wear, become acceptable during the day. And, with the ever-coveted 90’s brown lipsticks that are popping up everywhere, my guess is that lips will be having a major moment this season. Here are a few cool-weather tips to ensure your lips have their best season yet!
Rule #1: Stay Hydrated
It’s rare that you’ll read a beauty article about winter prep that doesn’t advise to drink water. What goes into your body will always show on the outside. Chapped lips may be the result of many things, but drinking enough water on a daily basis is a sure way to decrease your chance of experiencing flaky lips.
Rule #2: Invest in a Lip Scrub
When I was younger, I’d use a baby toothbrush to gently exfoliate my lips; it was–and still is– a cheap and effective way to make sure that my pout stayed smooth. If you’re more of a lip scrub kind of gal, choose one that’s gentle and high in emollients which will help seal in moisture. Be sure not to scrub your lips too hard.
Rule #3: Treat Yourself
I typically don’t use lip balms, but they’re a quick and convenient way to make sure that my lips get an extra dose of love throughout the day. If you’re on the market for a balmy treatment, try Cle de Peau Beaute Lip Contour Treatment; its super hydrating, works well under lipstick, and it works well as an overnight moisture treatment. I also love Chantecaille Lip Potion, the pink tinted formula is whipped, feels luxe and works like a charm to moisturize and soothe dry lips. If balms aren’t your thing and you’re willing to splurge a little, try Valmont Prime Lip Repair. A little goes a long way, and it makes your lips so soft. I like to apply it along with my skin care and let it work its magic while I apply my makeup.
Rule #4: Smile
Because everyone knows that “happy girls are the prettiest.”
