It’s no secret that women of color are often overlooked by the beauty industry; so when a line comes out that is designed with Black girls in mind we take notice. New to beauty counters this month, is Kat Von D Lock-It Color Correcting Eyeshadow Primer, collection of five primers to neutralize redness and discoloration and create 24-hr wear for your favorite eye looks. Available in five shades: fair, light, medium, tan and deep, the revolutionary primer sets a new precedent for primers by breaking away from the standard single “universal” shade that most companies tend to sell.
While the product works great as a shadow primer, I personally am not a shadow kind of girl, but I do love a good lipstick. So, I just my editorial beauty guinea pig skills to the test and tried the Deep shade as a lipstick. If you’re a brown girl, then you know that all nudes are not created equal, so finding a nude lipstick that doesn’t look ashy or too pink can be pretty tough. I wore the primer as lipstick for two full days around the ESSENCE office just to see how it was received, and after receiving multiple compliments from fellow beauty editors and co-workers in general, it’s official— Lock-It Color Correcting Eyeshadow Primer in Deep is my new favorite lippie. Simply apply one coat to your upper and lower lip and dust with a translucent powder to set in place. If you’re feeling flirty, apply a little gloss to the center of your bottom lip for an added dose of dimension.
