In 2016 when Shalom Blac broke the internet posting YouTube makeup tutorials, she changed the way people saw and interacted with beauty. With burns on her head, face, shoulders, neck, and chest as the result of a hot oil accident when she was a child, the beauty initially shied away from truly being seen.
But when she started posting how-to makeup videos online she learned a lot about how the beauty world was changing. She also taught us a lot about self love and what true beauty is. And she hasn’t stopped teaching us since. With a year-long contract as a Sephora Squad ambassador, she recently posted up at the SEPHORiA House of Beauty in Los Angeles and shared some beauty secrets with ESSENCE, as well as a useful hack for anyone with no eyebrow hair.
What are your current go-to beauty products?
I cannot live without the Benefit Precisely My Brow pencil because you know the girl has no brows. They’re literally bald. And then for my foundation right now I’ve been obsessed with the PÜR Cosmetics 4-in-1 foundation. I think it’s amazing. Morphe makeup spray—I love that. I’ve used so many makeup sprays but that has been my favorite. I don’t have to use any highlighter on my face because it kind of just makes my skin glow.
What’s the makeup trend that you wish would lose its hype?
I think the super highlighted under eye is too much. I used to do that and I’ve really settled down on it . Now I use a shade that is my shade to set my under eyes and it makes everything blend in and look flawless. Calm down on the highlighter. It’s cute but it’s too much.
What’s the best thing you’ve learned in your beauty journey?
It’s probably that a little goes a long way. You do not have to put too much to look beautiful because it just ends up looking cakey.
Any hacks or tricks that you swear by that you can share?
For those people who do not have any eyebrow hair, try avoiding applying moisturizer before your brows. So do your brows first then apply your moisturizer because the slip of the moisturizer will not let the brows stick on, or stay in place, or show up. So think brows first, moisturizer after!
