We love any and all forms of #BlackGirlMagic and Mented Cosmetics‘ recent win is definitely yet another reason to keep an eye on the brand.
The company recently announced a new round of $3 million in series seed from lead investor CircleUp Growth Partners. “This time around we pitched to far fewer [venture capitalists] – about 30 in total – and this time we were the ones saying no,” co-founder, KJ Miller said to Forbes.
Founded by KJ Miller and Amanda E. Johnson, two Black women, the makeup brand was born out of the frustration they experienced not being able to find a nude lipstick that truly matched their skin tone.
“We created Mented Cosmetics because we believe every woman should be able to find herself in the world of beauty. We know you’ll love being put first – because when it comes to beauty, no one deserves to be an afterthought,” the pair share on the brand’s website.
When Miller and Johnson launched Mented in 2017, as expected, the brand was met with much excitement by consumers and has since expanded into an array of makeup products, including lip gloss and nail polish, since its launch in 2017.
Soon after, investors took notice: In November of last year, the two entrepreneurs became the 15th and 16th Black women ever to raise $1 million in capital to help grow their business.
We’re super excited for these two beauty bosses and can’t wait to see how they continue to take over.
