Every weekend as I’m scrolling through my feed and Insta-stalking the celebrities and influencers that I fangirl for, I come across something interesting and inspiring in the beauty space. From jaw-dropping transformations to drool-inducing hair, there’s always something that I can’t stop staring at or watching, and it instantly garners a double-tap.
This highlight reel has been a long time coming because every weekend I’m mesmerized by the work of 19-year-old London-based makeup artist Natachi Ikem-Obih. While her beautiful hair, nails, and overall makeup are always a good look, it’s her exquisite artwork on the eyes that’s a standout every week.
Natachi is Nigerian so her love of bright colors is in her roots. And her use of shapes and patterns as makeup truly showcases her skills as an artist. I especially love that while the looks are striking, they’re not so complicated that I can’t attempt them. They motivate me to want to do more with my eye makeup.
She shared with ESSENCE the inspiration for her looks, and even the unconventional way she uses products.
How long have you been doing makeup?
I remember when I was much younger, I’d always get excited watching my mum do her makeup, and would practice whenever I had free time. I really started getting into makeup and taking it seriously at the age of 14.
You put a lot of emphasis on eye looks, any reason why you accentuate your eyes so much?
My eyelids are like my mini-canvas and I believe you can’t go wrong with an eyeshadow look, especially a cut crease. I love playing with liners, eyeshadows and even lipsticks (I believe makeup has no rules), as it can truly transform any makeup look and make a statement.
What inspires you to come up with these looks?
I am always thinking of my next look and I get a lot of my inspiration from everything and anything around me like my nails, candy, music, Instagram and much more. Sometimes I start doing my makeup, with no initial look in mind and go with the flow, it is such a great challenge and gets my creative juices flowing.
What are you go-to products for a quick look for a night out?
My top picks for a quick night out would have to be the Fenty Beauty hydrating foundation, Makeup Revolution Conceal & Define concealer, Laura Mercier medium-deep setting powder, and of course the ColourPop She’s A Rainbow eyeshadow palette and teal mascara. Regardless of where I’m going, I love adding a pop of color on my lower lash line. It’s such a great conversation starter!
