Launched in 2022, Relevant Skin coined the tagline “Your Skin Seen.” Since then, its mission has always been to create clean, multitasking-friendly beauty products for melanin-rich skin– such as their 4-in-1 everyday cream. Now, Relevant– created by founder, Nyakio Grieco, of game changing beauty retailer, Thirteen Lune– is expanding into the world of makeup with Relevant Cosmetics. “I am so excited to introduce this new line of skin-first, super inclusive cosmetics to the world,” says Grieco of her two new products: Lip & Cheek Multi-Tint and Moisture-Wrap Lip Gloss.
For Relevant Cosmetics, Grieco tells ESSENCE that her main priority was to create something joyful. To execute this, she chose luxurious gold packaging and shades that pair nicely on any skin tone. With Nicole Richie as the face of the brand, Grieco also collaborated with celebrity makeup artist, Beau Nelson to create the products. That said, the line has expert-approved formulations for every shade. For the Lip & Cheek tint: the shades deepen from a vibrant pink hue called Bayberry, to a rich bordeaux, Raspberry. Meanwhile, the gloss includes collagen-stimulating, filling sphere technology in a range of shades– from Blackberry to Clementine– which plump your lips over time.
Additionally, they’re ensuring to keep skin health in mind with each product, thanks to skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid and antioxidants. Afterall, as Grieco says, “makeup doesn’t look good if you’re not taking care of your skin.” Grieco also derived inspiration from her Kenyan heritage. “It will always be a part of everything I create,” she says of the products that include African oils. Not only that, all of the ingredients are cultivated from marginalized parts of the world– affording these women the opportunity to sell their products globally.
And even though Grieco just launched the new products over the weekend, the innovative founder is always thinking about what’s next. Soon, you can definitely expect inclusive foundation launches from the brand. For Grieco in general, it’s safe to say the sky’s the limit. “I’ll never go back to just thinking in a ‘single brand only’ way,” she says. “It’s really about being authentic to your story and making sure that you can build a highly profitable business while still doing great work.”
