For Black girls who like to indulge in beauty, there is one struggle in particular that we can all relate to. We all know that foundation is not a four-shades-encompass-all sort of deal, but sometimes the beauty world can be a little slow to react to the consumer. Those “toffee,” “mocha,” “spiced chai” dessert-inspired foundations that presumably cover all the shades of blackness never seem to suit more than one or two of my friends. So when the Kevyn Aucoin beauty team invited me to Bergdorf Goodman with an offer to custom blend my foundation, I jumped at the opportunity.
Over the years I’ve become more of a beauty minimalist, so I rarely—if ever—wear a full face of makeup, but I could support the entire tinted moisturizer business on my buck alone. The Sensual Skin Enhancer, which is available in 16 shades offers buildable coverage and serves as foundation and concealer all in one easy-to-carry compact. If you don’t fall within the spectrum of their 16 shades, or you just want something that’s been formulated specifically for you, their master makeup artists are happy to give you a once-over and identify the pigment formula for your perfect shade. And, dare I say, it is the perfect shade. For lighter, sheerer coverage, I spot treat and blend with a half pump of Rilatstil Moisturizing Fluid. If you prefer fuller coverage, simply apply directly to skin and blend with fingers or Kevyn Aucoin’s signature brush. Either way, you’ll step away from the mirror flaunting dewy, radiant, photo-ready skin. If you’re on the oilier side, you may want to finish the look with by dusting your face with your favorite translucent powder.
