To showcase the magic of our hair, earlier this Spring, Carol’s Daughter and celebrity hairstylist Johnny Wright teamed up with AI hair brand MYAVANA to create a next level Black hair experience, UNTANGLED, held at the Bronner Brothers International Beauty Show. “I’ve participated in the iconic Bronner Brothers beauty show as a platform artist for years, but returning to showcase and present the UNTANGLED Art exhibit felt different,” Wright shares with ESSENCE. “It was a dream come true. Partnering with Myavana for this elevated experience was a career highlight.”
The exhibition was curated by Jarvis DuBois, Smithsonian Museum Specialist, and curator Gia Harewood. The exhibit showcased gorgeous textures, oversized comb installations, and more.
This collection held significant power as hair has long been a way for us to express ourselves. But on the other side of that is the reality of our hair often being politicized or even banned from certain environments. The exhibition set out to do the important work of healing the pain that can come with our hair journeys. “My mission was to address and heal the impact of negative beauty standards that have affected our community,” Wright explains. “I hope that the UNTANGLED Art exhibit will play a role in unraveling and honoring the roots of our culture.”
Candace Mitchell Harris, Founder of MYAVANA agrees. “We want to innovate & elevate the hair industry and I couldn’t think of a better way to transform the Bronner Bros. hair show experience than through bringing the UNTANGLED art exhibit to the show,” she shares with ESSENCE. “Johnny’s vision of healing through transformative art and enlightening talks is exactly what our culture needs to be liberated from the oppressive standards of the past, and rise into our authentic selves.” As for what’s next for this iconic duo? Harris says, “we hope to bring this experience to communities around the world.”
