The 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards took place Sunday evening in Los Angeles, and with it, old Hollywood glamour was in full swing. The red carpet favorite herself, Zendaya, graced the scene in a Law Roach-styled Louis Vuitton gown and picturesque bob, referencing Black entertainment and beauty icons such as Joyce Bryant. Her hairstylist, Coree Moreno, says “Joyce Bryant’s bold yet sophisticated style played a huge role in shaping the overall aesthetic.”
Using Bryant’s voluminous style as a north star, they landed with a look that gave “that vintage glam but with a modern edge that suits Zendaya’s personality and red-carpet presence.”
From Black Hollywood glamour homages to engagement ring sightings, each detail of Zendaya’s Golden Globes look turned heads. A soft blush and a neutral lip accentuated the actress’s beauty, paired with her coiffed hairdo to channel the allure of Hollywood’s golden age that Moreno says drew from “50s bombshells.”
Zendaya’s Golden Globe nominated-portrayal of “Tashi Duncan” in her film Challengers also saw her in an edgy bob style of sorts. For the carpet, Moreno opted for a more structured, fuller body take on the short cut. First prepping her hair with Nexxus Volume Medium Hold Mousse and Nexxus Heat Defense Prep and Protect Spray, Moreno enlisted an “old-school roller set” and a 1-inch curling iron on Zendaya’s tresses to create a voluminous look that held its shape and shine well into the evening. “The trick to keeping it in place all night was using a combination of lightweight hairspray and setting products that don’t weigh the hair down but still allow for movement,” he tells ESSENCE.
Protecting her hair amidst heavy styling is of utmost importance to the celebrity stylist, which is why Moreno takes the necessary precautions of pre-styling deep conditioning, heat protectant, and of course, quality products. A full list of products used for Zendaya’s look includes: ghd styling products such as their Curve Classic Curl Iron, Helios Professional Hair Dryer, and Professional Diffuser as well as aforementioned Nexxus products and their Comb Thru Flexible Hold Hair Spray to set.
Moreno delights in the overall process that is creating a dazzling award-show worthy look, “there’s so much energy, excitement, and creativity around it, and always a bit of magic when everything comes together—the outfit, the hair, the makeup,” he recounts. “It felt like a true collaboration, and to see Zendaya feeling confident and amazing in the look we created was incredibly rewarding.”
